Suffolk’s Dontrell Brite helped lead the Mount Olive College men’s basketball team to its first two-game winning streak of the season on Sunday, as the Trojans held off 12th-ranked Augusta State 72-69 in a non-conference basketball game at Kornegay Arena in Mount Olive, N.C.
Mount Olive (3-7) led by as many as 14 points in the second half, but Augusta State (6-2) used a 7-0 run to tie the game 59-59 with 4:47 remaining. After Jordan McCain’s free throw broke the tie, Wright sandwiched a pair of three-pointers around a Ryan Weems three to give Mount Olive a 66-62 lead with 3:22 remaining.
A basket by Norcom High School graduate Deshaune Greene with 20 seconds left, made it a two-posession game, but a three pointer put Augusta State within a point, at 70-69, with 13 seconds remaining.
Green accounted for 10 of Mount Olive’s 28 points off the bench. He finished with three rebounds and three blocks.
Brite, a Nansemond River High School alum, and Caleb Henderson of helped clamp down defensively, holding the Jaguars to 3-for-15 shooting from three-point range. Brite and Henderson are both playing at the guard position for the Trojans.
