Lady Saints fall in Williamsburg

Williamsburg Christian proved to be every bit the challenge that Nansemond-Suffolk Academy girls’ basketball coach Kim Aston was expecting, as the Lady Saints were defeated 58-38 Friday evening on the road.
“They were very physical, and we shied away from them,” Aston stated in an email. “We rushed everything we did offensively and didn’t execute offensively, or take care of the ball. Defensively, we played okay, but gave up too many offensive rebounds.”
The Lady Eagles were led by junior Jalynn Ponzo, who had 21 points.
NSA went 0-of-4 from behind the arc, while Williamsburg Christian went 8-of-8.
Freshman guard Harper Birdsong led the Lady Saints with 15 points to go with three assists, while junior guard Jessica Pieroni contributed 14 points on only 38-percent shooting for the night. Junior guard/forward Kaylor Nash added seven points, seven rebounds and three steals.
The Lady Saints (8-3, 0-0) will return home on Tuesday to host Norfolk Christian.
