Jane Harris Gatling, 92, passed away
Feb. 8, 2013, in Sentara Obici Hospital, surrounded by her family.
She was the daughter of the late Mary Lloyd and Girlie Ashton Harris. She was predeceased by her husband George Pepper Gatling and a sister Mildred Holton.
Jane was a member of Oxford United Methodist Church, the Suffolk Art League, the Lake Kilby Garden Club, the Suffolk Historical Society and a member of the Suffolk Social Club.
She was graduated from Mary Baldwin College and started her teaching career as a seventh-grade teacher in Holland. She then opened a private kindergarten in her home and finished her teaching career at Nansemond Suffolk Academy. She truly loved teaching and working with children.
Survivors include her children George P. Gatling, Jr., Lloyd A. Gatling and wife Judy, all of Suffolk, Mary Jane Black and husband Jerry Black of Purcellville, and Roxane Gilmore, former First Lady of Virginia and husband the Hon. James S. Gilmore III of Richmond; grandchildren Ashley Wood and husband Jason, Erin Miner and husband Trent, Richard Gatling and wife Stephanie, Jay Gilmore and wife Katie, and Ashton Gilmore; great grandchildren Rylan and Hayden Wood, Caden and Paxton Miner, and Cody and Jacob Gatling.
A graveside funeral service will be conducted on Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2013, at 2 pm in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Suffolk, by the Rev. Ken Hanson. R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 W. Washington Street, Suffolk, is serving the family.
