Following are this week’s Suffolk News-Herald Player of the Week nominees:

  • Kara Lyles, Brandee Johnson, Mia McClain and Kieaira Middleton of the Nansemond River 4×200 meter relay team — They won the state championship on Saturday with a time of 1:41.87 after battling through injuries and uncertainties this season.
  • Harper Birdsong, freshman point guard for Nansemond-Suffolk Academy basketball — She was named to the all-conference first team this week. On Monday in the quarterfinals of the Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools tournament, she led her team with 20 points and 10 assists, shooting 57 percent from the field. Though she struggled against Cape Henry in the semifinals, she still managed 13 points, tying for the team lead.
  • Alexis Albright, Jamee Albright, Alexus Copeland and Kristen Vick of the Lakeland 4×800 meter relay team — In their first visit to the state championships, they finished 15th but with one of their best times ever — 10:00.57.
  • Khadedra Croker, junior center for King’s Fork basketball — As she has all season long, she was a stalwart presence for the Lady Bulldogs in the regional quarterfinals, despite the loss. She put up 14 points on 58 percent shooting along with nine rebounds and six blocks.
