Sarah M. Elam, 84, of 404 Fuller St., Suffolk, Va., died Monday, Feb. 25, 2013, at Sentara Obici Hospital. She was a native of Southampton County and the daughter of the late Jack Tucker and Nancy Rose. She was preceded in death by her husband, Reginald Elam; one daughter, Barbara Moore; two sons, Reginald Elam Jr. and David Elam.
She was a housewife and former member of Gilfield Baptist Church in Ivor, Va.
She leaves to cherish her loving memory four daughters, Brenda Scott (Ricky), of Suffolk, Linda Holland (James), of Carrsville, Va., Laverne Johnson (David), Sarah Haley, both of Suffolk; five sons, Larry Elam (Verona), of Chesapeake, Va., Calvin Elam (Cynthia), of Newport News, Va., James Elam (Gloria), of Portsmouth, Va., Ernest Elam (Angela) and Eric Elam (Robbin), both of Suffolk; 29 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; one sister-in-law, Gracie Waters (Thomas), of Zuni, Va.; two brothers-in-law, Robert Phillips, of Chesapeake, Va., and William Lyons, of Hampton, Va.; one daughter-in-law, Renee Elam; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A funeral service will be held at noon, Saturday, March 2, 2013, at Metropolitan Baptist Church, 125 County St., Suffolk, officiated by the Rev. James Elam Sr. Interment will be in Nansemond-Suffolk Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the home of Brenda and Ricky Scott, 109 Shepherd St., Suffolk.
