Virginia State University alumni gathered recently at Queen Street Baptist Church in Norfolk to celebrate Founders Day.

Virginia State University alumni gathered recently at Queen Street Baptist Church in Norfolk to celebrate Founders Day.

The Tidewater Alumni Chapter of Virginia State University will hold its annual Scholarship Endowment Luncheon on April 6 at the Greenbrier Country Club from 1 to 5 p.m. Tickets are $45. Elder Valerie Brown of The Mount Lebanon Baptist Church in Chesapeake and Elizabeth City, N.C., will be the speaker for the event.

The Tidewater Alumni Chapter will honor distinguished friends of Virginia State University, including G. Robert Aston Jr., chairman and CEO of TowneBank, and Dr. James G. Merrill, superintendent of Virginia Beach City Public Schools.

This year, the chapter also will honor Virginia State Trojans for their service to their communities. Among the honorees will be Elder Valerie Brown of Mount Lebanon Baptist Church; Anthony Burfoot, vice-mayor of Norfolk; Virginia Delegate Daun Hester; Clarissa McAdoo, executive director of the Suffolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority; Prescott Sherrod, former Virginia Beach councilman and CEO of PEMCCO; and Dr. William Ward, former mayor of Chesapeake.

The chapter worshiped at the historic Queen Street Baptist Church in Norfolk on March 10 to celebrate Founders Day.

The alumni organization is a multi-generational chapter with active members who graduated between the 1950s and 2000s.
