Lady Saints experience ups, downs

The girls’ lacrosse team at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy found itself in a couple of shootouts in home games played on Tuesday and Wednesday. While the Lady Saints prevailed 14-13 against Norfolk Collegiate School on Tuesday, they fell 10-9 against Bishop Sullivan Catholic High School on Wednesday.
NSA sophomore Jessie Lerner distinguished herself in both games. She scored three goals against the Lady Crusaders, as did fellow sophomore Sarah Higinbotham. Sophomore Holly Kozak, senior Alex Mathews and junior Carlie Thorndike had one goal apiece. Freshman goalkeeper Harper Birdsong had 14 saves.
On Tuesday against Norfolk Collegiate, seven different NSA players scored, led by Lerner with five goals. Sophomore Grace Haddad scored three times, senior Abby Mathews scored twice and senior Julia Rapoport, juniors Joelle Pond and Thorndike and Higinbotham each scored once.
Kozak led with two assists, while Alex Mathews, freshman Madi Goldberg and Haddad and Abby Mathews each had one.
The Lady Saints (3-8, 0-1) host Cape Henry Collegiate School on Friday.
