Firefighters rescue a 19-year-old accident victim from her vehicle.

A 19-year-old woman and her baby were rescued from their vehicle Thursday evening after she swerved to avoid hitting another vehicle.

The Suffolk Police Department and Suffolk Department of Fire and Rescue responded to the accident in the 5100 block of O’Kelly Drive in the Holland area. Chelsea Fay, 19, had called 911 at 5 p.m. after swerving and over-correcting, causing her 1991 GMC Jimmy to land on the driver’s side in the ditch.

The 4-week-old baby girl was unharmed and safely removed while still in her car seat. Rescuers cut off the roof of the vehicle to extract Fay and transported her to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
