A local campground held a celebration of its 30-year anniversary on Saturday.
Davis Lakes and Campground was begun as a pet project of Art Davis, who owned a construction company and originally used the site as a borrow pit.
Davis is now deceased, but his daughter, Denise Thomas, still owns and operates the campground. It has 137 campsites, several cabins, lakes, hiking and biking trails and more.
The campground had a meal, silent auction, raffle, cornhole and other activities Saturday to mark the occasion.
“We’re still going to celebrate,” Thomas said, referring to the gloomy weather.
Her mother, Helen Davis, said she is pleased to see the campground still going strong. Asked if she was surprised the family business made it 30 years, she said, “I didn’t think I was going to make it 30 years.”
The business lost half its sites several years ago when the southwestern bypass cut through the area. The campground had to make some changes but has kept on rolling.
“There are ups and downs, but we have a lot of fun,” Thomas said.
