SUFFOLK — Shirley Moody Underwood passed away on April 27, 2013.

The daughter of G.T. Moody and Effie Howell Moody, she is survived by her devoted husband, Thomas G. Underwood. Together they shared a magnificent journey of 60 years. She is also survived by her daughter, Pamela U. McGhee and her husband, Ty, of Richmond; her sons, Col. Peter T. Underwood and his wife, Anita, of Norfolk, William M. Underwood and his wife, Kim, of Suffolk; four grandchildren, Mallory and Thomas Marshall, Shane and Sarah Underwood; her sisters, Anne Rountree, Tommy Buchanan, Jacquelyn Shackleford; her special niece and friend Penny Pfeil and her husband George; numerous nieces and nephews and her special caregiver, Samantha (Sam) Cousar.

A native of Nansemond County, she graduated from Cypress High School and Radford College. She spent most of her adult life in the Holland community. A devoted teacher that loved all children, she taught hundreds of students over four decades. An accomplished musician, for many years, she played the organ, piano and sang in the choir at the Holland Christian Church.

During the last years of her life, encroaching illness prevented her from enjoying the companionship of her friends, but she continued to show love and affection for her family, always greeting them with a smile and leaving them with a kiss.

Visitation will be at the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 W. Washington St., on Sunday, May 5, 2013, from 2 to 4 p.m. A private burial will be held at a later date.
