Kerry Holmes of Suffolk was nominated Monday night in a Democratic caucus in Chesapeake to run for the 14th Virginia Senate District seat in the General Assembly.

He will face off against Republican nominee John Cosgrove in the run for the seat, which is being vacated by Harry Blevins’ retirement.

Though only Holmes declared his candidacy, the caucus continued because choosing not to nominate a candidate is an option.

The special election is set for Aug. 6.
