Tropical storm warning in effect

The tornado watch has expired. Suffolk remains under a tropical storm warning until 8 a.m. Saturday.

Suffolk Parks and Recreation co-ed softball games set for tonight have been canceled because of field conditions.

The National Weather Service has extended the tornado watch for Suffolk and surrounding areas through 8 p.m.

The city reported the following areas have high water on the roadway as of 11:20 a.m. Conditions could improve after a period of no rainfall:

  • 400 block of Wilson Street
  • Wellons Street at West Washington Street
  • Wilroy Road between Route 58 and Williams Road
  • Holland Road at the train trestle
  • Corinth Chapel Road between Gates Road and Camp Pond Road
  • 5400 block of Holy Neck Road

The Suffolk on the Move 5K Run/Walk and 1-mile fun run is still on for Saturday morning, Suffolk Partnership for a Healthy Community Executive Director Robbie Laughton said Friday afternoon. The race has more than 550 registered participants. Find more information at the partnership’s website.

A tornado watch is in effect for Suffolk and surrounding areas until 1 p.m. today.

The National Weather Service issued the tornado watch around 5:40 a.m. A tropical storm warning and flood watch also remain in effect.

Andrea, which according to the National Hurricane Center is rapidly losing its tropical characteristics, has the potential to spawn a few weak tornados. It also will dump 2 to 4 inches of rain and have winds up to 30 miles per hour, with gusts up to 45 mph.

Wind and rain are expected to increase throughout the day.
