Gilmore Trower Jr. was called home to rest on Wednesday, June 5, 2013, while at Maryview Hospital. He was born Oct. 4, 1922, in Suffolk, to the late Virginia B. Trower and Gilmore Trower. He was the youngest of three children and earned the nickname “Bayboy.”

He married the late Marcella Pugh, and to this union one daughter was born.

Gilmore enlisted in the United States Army and was a World War II veteran. Upon retiring, he became a civil servant. He was employed by the Naval Weapons Station, where he retired after 30 years of dedicated service. After retirement, he became an auto mechanic and a serious walker (malls, tracks and neighborhoods).

Gilmore was an avid jazz lover, and his favorite musicians were Nat King Cole and Tony Bennett; he also enjoyed sailing and fishing.

He was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Michael Koonce.

Gilmore leaves behind to cherish his memory, his beloved daughter, Guinelle Trower-Koonce; grandson, Micah; niece, Dr. Ruth Holland; nephew, Wilmer Porter (Budgie) and many other nieces and nephews.

Mr. Trower will be on view at the funeral home on Tuesday from noon to 7 p.m. A celebration of life service will take place at noon Wednesday at Macedonia A.M.E. Church, and he will be laid to rest at Carver Memorial Cemetery.
