The new elementary school off Holland Road will be named Pioneer Elementary School, the Suffolk Public Schools board decided at its meeting Thursday night.

The school is under construction on former farmland at Holland Road’s intersection with Pioneer Road. The vote was 4-3, with Enoch Copeland, Judith Brooks-Buck and Lorraine Skeeter preferring naming it Southwestern Elementary School.

A groundbreaking ceremony is set for July 8.

Meanwhile, members voted to table a decision on whether to continue a pilot program at King’s Fork High School allowing student cellphone use, opting to seek input first from principals at all three high schools.
