Suffolk police arrested a 25-year-old mother Sunday after allegedly finding the woman’s two children had been left home alone.

Lakeisha Danielle Myrick, 25, is charged with two counts of abuse and neglect of children and two counts of cruelty to children.

Officers went to the home at Heritage Acres Apartments, located at 1015 Nansemond Parkway, and knocked on the door of the apartment after receiving an anonymous tip that children at the home were regularly left there alone, city spokeswoman Diana Klink said in a press release.

A 3-year-old girl opened the door to police, and officers could see a 2-year-old girl standing unclothed nearby, Klink wrote in the press release.

Officers called out to see if anyone else was there, and no one responded.

When officers entered the apartment, it was “found to be unkempt with bug infestation and food on the floors,” Klink wrote.

The mother returned to the apartment while officers were still on scene.

Child Protective Services responded, and the children were turned over to their grandmother, Klink wrote.

Several residents of the apartment complex said Monday afternoon they did not know Myrick.
