UPDATE Friday 8:18 p.m.
The National Weather Service says the threat of severe weather has waned and therefore has canceled early the severe thunderstorm warning.
However, additional showers and thunderstorms are still possible tonight and throughout the weekend.
The warning wasn’t the only thing to be canceled early; the city announced its TGIF concert at Constant’s Wharf was ending ahead of schedule because of lightning in the area.
Earlier: A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for Suffolk and surrounding areas until 10 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.
The main threat from the storms will be damaging winds, according to the city of Suffolk in a post on its Facebook page. Some storms may produce large hail, and heavy downpours will bring the potential for minor flooding.
The city could see more than 10 inches of rain in the next 72 hours, the Facebook post added.
The city already has canceled a canoe excursion to Lake Drummond that was set for Saturday morning.
