“It’s all about you today, the summer senior class of 2013,” Superintendent Deran R. Whitney said to the students. “I wish you the best and congratulate each of you.”

Samantha Jones is a graduate from Lakeland High School. She, along with 44 other students, graduated from summer school this past Thursday. Jones is planning to enlist in the Army following her graduation.

Whitney challenged the students to employ the “five C’s” — communication, collaboration, creativity, critical thinking and compassion — he said would bring success to the student’s post-high school lives.

“I’m pretty relieved that it’s over,” said Michael Sullivan, a graduating student from Nansemond River High School. “I’m probably going to go to a music trade school and learn how to make instruments.”

Principals from each of the four participating high schools handed out diplomas to the 45 students. One student from Smithfield High School joined 17 from King’s Fork, 11 from Lakeland High School and 16 from Nansemond River High School in graduating.

“I’m happy. It hasn’t been easy, but I made it,” said Samantha Jones, a Lakeland High School graduate. “I’m going into the Army to further my education and serve my country.”

“I feel accomplished that I made it this far,” said Jarnee Williams, a King’s Fork High School graduate. “I’m planning to move forward with my life and possibly go to college.”

Summer school classes were held from June 26 through July 21.

Michael Blount, the summer school principal, said he was “proud of them (students), of their hard work and accomplishments. I wish them the best of success.”

When asked how he felt after graduating, Jamal Brown, a graduate of Lakeland High School, replied, “Excited. I’m going to go to a trade school.”

“I can’t explain how I feel,” said Devante Drayton, a graduate of Lakeland High School. Drayton is planning to join the military.
