Delegate John Cosgrove handily won a special election on Tuesday to fill the Senate seat of the retiring Harry Blevins.

He took nearly 91 percent of the vote in the 14th District, which includes all or part of 11 Suffolk precincts. Cosgrove’s opponent, Suffolk native Kerry Holmes, had announced he would withdraw from the race but did so too late to have his name taken off the ballots.

Holmes garnered 14 percent of the vote in Suffolk, his hometown. His strongest showing was in Isle of Wight County, where 20 percent of the 109 voters supported Holmes.

Turnout in Suffolk was slow. The White Marsh precinct, for example, had only three voters the entire day. All three supported Cosgrove.
