A 61-year-old man died at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital early Friday morning after being struck by an SUV Thursday night.

City spokeswoman Diana Klink said the man, Haywood Madison, walked into oncoming traffic on Carolina Road near the intersection with Brook Avenue about 8:32 p.m. He was airlifted to the hospital but died at 12:03 a.m.

“The preliminary investigation indicates that alcohol was a factor in the accident,” Klink wrote in a press release.

No charges have been placed against the driver, and the investigation is ongoing.
