SUFFOLK — Edwin “Ted” Abell Friend Jr., 91, died Sept. 11, 2013.
A native of New York City, N.Y., he was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Marion S. Friend. He was the son of the late Edwin Abell and Anna Lee Worthington Hewes Friend. Mr. Friend was a graduate of Peddie School, Hightstown, N.Y., and Pennsylvania State University, School of Forestry. He retired in 1981 as manager of the Land Department with Union Camp Corp, after 25 years of service and was an Army Air Corps World War II veteran.
Mr. Friend was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church, where he served on the Church Council, sang in the adult choir and was a former president of the McLemore Bible Class. He was a member of the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity, a former member of the Suffolk School Board, past president of the Suffolk Kiwanis Club, a volunteer with Meals on Wheels and the “Lifeline” program at Louise Obici Memorial Hospital, a former member of the Churchland Masonic Lodge No. 276, and past president of Independent Living of Lake Prince Woods.
Survivors include his daughters, Patricia Conrad, of Suffolk, Marianna Friend, of Harpersfield, Ohio; and his son, Edwin A. Friend III of Suffolk.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Sept. 15, 2013, at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Myrtle Hatcher and the Rev. Woodie Rea in Main Street United Methodist Church, 202 N. Main St., Suffolk. Memorial donations may be made to the church. Condolences may be registered at www.rwbakerfh.com.
