Carr’s selection was based on scores earned when he participated in the Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholarship competition. The scholarship is designed to provide new Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society members with financial resources while enrolled in a two-year college. In addition, recipients are those who are pursuing an associate degree focused on business.

“Marty has consistently executed amazing work at the college,” said Omega Zeta Chapter of PTK Co-Advisor Jillian Overby. “He is definitely a PDCCC student success and has shown strong leadership as president of the college’s chapter of PTK.”

At PDCCC, Carr has served as Student Government Association president, student representative on the President’s Advisory Council and vice president of service for PTK. In February, he was selected to represent the college at the Virginia General Assembly and the Franklin-Southampton Area Chamber of Commerce Eggs and Issues Legislative Breakfast.

Currently, he is a work-study student for English instructor and Movie Night coordinator Nancy Warren, and he tutors for Student Support Services.

“This scholarship will allow me to continue my educational goals at Old Dominion University,” said Carr. “I have to thank my fiancé, Dana Whitehurst, for her support of my academic endeavors and success.”

His ultimate goal is to earn his CPA.

Carr’s accolades include the President’s List with a 4.0 GPA; Certificate of Recognition for Outstanding Student Leadership and Service from PDCCC and Franklin Department of Parks and Recreation; and first place for his essay in the Fourth Annual PDCCC Literary Festival. He was also awarded the Dr. Douglas and Grace Boyce Scholarship. He resides in Sedley.
