Following are this week’s nominees for the Duke Automotive-Suffolk News-Herald Player of the Week:

  • Deshaun Wethington, sophomore for King’s Fork High School football — He delivered yet another stellar performance that left staggering offensive statistics in its wake. He carried the ball 16 times and ran for 249 of the Bulldogs’ 264 yards rushing and scored four touchdowns in Friday’s 49-21 homecoming win over visiting Indian River High School. It was his second 200-yard rushing game this year.
  • Summer Parker, senior for Lakeland High School field hockey — The Lady Cavaliers’ all-time leading goal-scorer registered a hat trick on Wednesday but spread the ball around even more, contributing four assists in a 9-0 victory over Heritage High School. Including the post-season, she scored 38 goals in 2012. Five games remain in this year’s regular season and after Wednesday, her total is already at 32, and her career total is up to 124.
  • Latrell “Vegas” Sandifer, senior for Nansemond River High School football — He followed up his 200-plus yard game last week with another one on Friday, running for 221 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries in the Warriors’ 31-12 homecoming win over visiting Lakeland High School. On defense, he also came up with a key interception in the end zone to terminate a Cavaliers momentum shift.
  • Cole Christiansen, sophomore for Nansemond-Suffolk Academy football — Though still an underclassman, he has quickly risen to being the quarterback of the defense, and his leadership was on full display Friday night against host Portsmouth Christian School. The Patriots had success early, and then the Saints shut them down. He led NSA with 15 tackles in a 72-20 win.
