Player of the Week nominees

Following are this week’s nominees for the Duke Automotive-Suffolk News-Herald Player of the Week:

  • Jermaal Wells, junior for Nansemond River High School football: He played a huge role in helping the Warriors clinch a playoff berth on Friday night. He scored touchdowns on runs of 36 and 17 yards, completed a 28-yard touchdown pass to senior wideout Tyshaun Anthony, and he also caught an interception on defense.
  • Summer Parker, senior for Lakeland High School field hockey: She led her team to the regional championship this past week, illustrating why she was named the 4A South Region Player of the Year. In Monday’s 16-0 quarterfinal win, she scored six times, in Tuesday’s 9-0 semifinal win, she had a hat trick and an assist and in Thursday’s 4-2 title game win, she scored twice.
  • Caylin Harris, junior for Nansemond-Suffolk Academy volleyball: She was strong throughout the state tournament and saved her best for last. In Saturday’s four-set state championship win over Fredericksburg Christian High School, she led the team with career highs, 21 kills and six blocks. In a straight-sets semifinal win, she had 12 kills and in the straight-sets quarterfinals victory, she produced 13.
  • Aireon Leary, junior for King’s Fork High School volleyball: The Bulldogs’ co-captain helped lead his team to the Ironclad Conference 18 tournament championship this past week. In a four-set semifinals win over Denbigh High School, he had nine kills, and in the four-set championship win against Heritage High School, he registered nine kills, four assists and three blocks.
