Suffolk Humane sets holiday plans

This holiday season, Suffolk Humane is hosting what could be described as Toys for Tots for pets, plus an opportunity Saturday for family members including pets to get a photo with Santa.

Suffolk Humane’s holiday pet pantry aims to ensure no pet goes without food, treats or toys this Christmas, much the same as the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve’s Toys for Tots campaign makes sure all children wake up with a toy beneath the tree.

From 10 a.m. to noon on Dec. 7 at the group’s office in the village of Driver, 4300 Nansemond Parkway, Suffolk Humane members will provide folks with food and other pet items as long as supplies last, Suffolk Humane Director of Community Outreach Kay Hurley stated in a news release.

Suffolk Humane invites folks who would like to donate to the cause to bring their donations to its Driver office prior to the event.

“During our first pet pantry held in August, we were able to help 33 families, with 65 dogs and 42 cats benefiting from donations of dry and canned food and other pet supplies,” Michele Thames, Suffolk Humane’s executive director, stated.

“We know that many people are having a challenging time making ends meet, and we want to help them provide for their pets, especially during the holiday season.”

Meanwhile, Cookies With Santa Paws will take place at the Magnolia Club, 1029 Nansemond Parkway, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Folks can get a family photo with Santa and participate in a drawing for a dog gift basket and a cat gift basket, plus purchase personalized Christmas ornaments.

Photo prices will vary based on size and quality, but as a guide, cost will be $12 for a 5-by-7, $20 for a 8-by-10 page (either one photo or multiple photos), and multiple prints will receive a price break.

All proceeds will benefit Suffolk Humane, and the group is inviting folks to join them in celebrating the holiday spirit.
