Isle of Wight Academy broke out of its early-season scoring slump but did not have enough for Hampton Christian, falling to the Warriors 73-54 Monday night.
The Chargers had averaged more than 36 points per game, but rode double-figure scoring from sophomore Bryce Casey (17 points) and senior Justice Fuller (13 points) to notch their highest offensive output of the season.
Casey single-handedly kept IWA in the game early. He scored nine of his team’s first 11 points as Hampton Christian sprinted out to a 22-11 first-quarter lead.
After halftime, IWA cut the Warrior lead to 7 points, 43-36, on Gage Rogers’ layup with 30 seconds left in the third.
But Hampton Christian was equal to the task, outscoring IWA 17-2 during the first four minutes of the final quarter.
IWA (0-5, 0-2 Metro Athletic Conference) faces Atlantic Shores at home on Friday. Hampton is 3-2, 2-0 in the Metro.
