The Isle of Wight Academy boys’ basketball team was determined to finally put a game in the win column on Thursday night.

Ron Carr, head coach of the visiting Suffolk Christian Academy Knights summed up what made the difference

“Isle of Wight did a good job pressing us,” he said, and despite the visitors’ efforts, they couldn’t break the full-court press, which the Chargers kept up throughout the game.

The strategy gave IWA a 61-36 victory.

Sophomore forward Bryce Casey led the way for the Chargers with a game-high 13 points, junior center Adam Webb had 11 and senior guard Josh Darden chipped in nine.

Though Knights junior point guard and team co-captain Nathan Leiter was back from a mandatory 24-hour resting period as a result of having strep throat, he was not at 100 percent.

He managed nine points along with sophomore forward Steven Effler, while sophomore guard Michael Cornette had seven and senior center/forward Noah Nickert had six.

Isle of Wight will compete in the Peninsula Catholic High School Christmas tournament Dec. 26-28, and Suffolk Christian will participate in the Battle of the Border tournament at Southampton Academy, running Dec. 27-28.
