Norfolk State University student Makeya Ashburn, of Suffolk, was recently inducted into the NSU Sociological Honor Society and was also honored as Student of the Year in the Bachelor of Arts sociology program.

The 24-year-old senior was one of 31 students inducted. She was recognized for her academic accomplishments and volunteer efforts in the sociology discipline, said Robert Perkins, chair of the sociology department.

Students inducted into the honor society must major in sociology, be at least a junior, maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average and complete at least 18 hours of study in the discipline. Overall, the NSU Sociological Honor Society has more than 55 members who are juniors, seniors or graduate students.
