Player of the Week nominees

Following are this week’s nominees for the Duke Automotive-Suffolk News-Herald Player of the Week:
- Macy Mears, senior for Nansemond-Suffolk Academy basketball: Playing against teams from all over the country at a Florida tournament, she earned the Most Valuable Player award for her team, which went 2-1. She capped off a strong trio of games with a team-leading 20 points to go with seven rebounds, two assists and a block in Monday’s 65-56 win over Pisgah High School from Alabama.
- Zakiya Rashid, junior for Nansemond River High School track and field: She took first place at the Southeastern Invitational on Saturday in the shot put with a Group 6A-level state qualifying throw of 39-feet-2.25-inches. She also was the top Suffolk finisher in the 55-meter hurdles, placing eighth with a time of 9.07 seconds.
- Eric Habecker, junior for Suffolk Christian Academy basketball: He stepped up to play point guard during a tournament when team leader Nathan Leiter got injured. He co-led the Knights with 14 points in a win Friday afternoon. Despite a blowout loss later the same day, he scored 10 more points. Saturday dealt a heart-breaking last second loss, but he still stood firm with a team-high 16 points.
- Jessica Pieroni, senior for Nansemond-Suffolk Academy basketball: She helped power her team against competition from Florida, Connecticut and Alabama. She closed the tournament with 19 points in a win on Monday, led her team with 17 to go with six boards despite a loss against its most challenging opponent on Saturday, and chipped in 11 in a blowout win on Friday.
