Virginia Cunningham Rose, 89, of Fredericksburg died Monday, Jan. 6, 2014 at Sentara Obici Hospital in Suffolk. She was affectionately known as Giga or Honey.

Mrs. Rose was a native of Richmond and the daughter of the late Clarence and Katherine Cunningham. She was a graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School and attended Westhampton College of the University of Richmond.

Mrs. Rose was the widow of Dr. John B. Rose Jr. whom she married in 1945. In 1951 they moved to Fredericksburg, where Dr. Rose established his medical practice. Giga was known as the unofficial welcome wagon to Fredericksburg for new physicians and their families.

Mrs. Rose was a member of many local civic organizations and was one of the founding members of the Parnassus Club. She was a member of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Giga was a longtime avid Redskins fan and attended Redskins games for over 40 years. She was a master gardener and a member of the Town and Country Garden Club.

Survivors include four children, Dr. John B. Rose III and wife Karen of Fredericksburg, Richard P. Rose and wife Linda of Fredericksburg, Katherine R. Rawls and husband David of Suffolk, and Clifford Y. Rose and wife Melanie of Fredericksburg. Honey also had 10 grandchildren, Katherine R. Musick and husband Bert, Michael J. Rose and wife Crystal, Thomas B. Rose, Matthew N. Rose, Dana V. Rose, Wesley D. Rawls and wife Renee, Virginia E. Rawls, John B. Rawls, Katherine R. Monn and husband David, and Clifford Y. Rose II; and six great-grandchildren, A.V., Ryland, Logan, Evan, Owen and Cheyenne.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 9 at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg.

A mass of Christian celebration will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10 at St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mary Catholic Church, 1009 Stafford Ave., Fredericksburg, VA 22401; or to St. Mary of the Presentation, 202 Broad St., Suffolk, VA 23434.
