A Nansemond River High School student has been recommended for expulsion after school officials found an unloaded BB clip in his bookbag.
School principal Thomas McLemore Jr. wrote in a letter to parents on Monday that administrators received information that morning that a student may have brought a handgun to school on Friday. The police department was notified, and an administrator and the school resource officer removed the student from class, according to the letter.
A search of the student’s bookbag yielded the unloaded magazine clip from a BB gun, according to the letter.
“Because possession of this item is a violation of School Board policy, the student has been recommended for expulsion,” the letter said.
It concluded with a plea for parents to discuss with their child the importance of notifying a teacher, administrator or other staff member in the event of a situation that could threaten student safety.
City spokeswoman Diana Klink wrote in an email that the original tip came from another parent whose son told him he saw the other student with a gun in the locker room. No one was threatened or injured, Klink added. The student will not face criminal charges.
