Young Suffolk artists are encouraged to seize a prime opportunity for having their work exhibited in a gallery next month.

Students in grades 10, 11 or 12 who live in or attend school in Suffolk are eligible to submit two works in any medium for the Suffolk Art League’s Exhibit of Excellence, which runs Feb. 4-28 at the Suffolk Art Gallery, 118 Bosley Ave. Submissions should be brought to the gallery from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Jan. 28.

“I’m always so impressed by the quality of work that our high school students are doing,” said Linda Bunch, executive director of the Suffolk Art League. “There’s so many students that could easily compete in the professional juried show. It’s nice to give the public a chance to see what wonderful work our students are doing.”

In addition to students who attend Suffolk Public Schools, Nansemond-Suffolk Academy or Suffolk Christian Academy, students who live in Suffolk but are home schooled or attend a school outside the city also are eligible.

Bunch said the prospectus was sent to many different home school co-ops, the Governor’s School for the Arts and other interested parties.

“Our home school community gets larger and larger, so we want to make sure they know it includes them,” Bunch said.

Heather Bryant, a lecturer on foundations and printmaking at Old Dominion University, will serve as the juror for the show. She received her Master of Fine Arts degree from Norfolk State University and Old Dominion University’s joint visual studies program.

In addition to choosing about 100 to 120 pieces for the show, Bryant will select the winners of five awards.

Awards will include $150 for first place, $100 for second place and $75 for third place, as well as a $200 award given in honor of Dana Adams, who has worked with the exhibit since its inception, and a $100 award given in memory of Sharon Picot, who was instrumental in the creation of the Chip Picot Memorial Student Scholarship Fund.

There will be an opening reception and awards presentation Feb. 4 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
