Roger John Heins

Roger John Heins, 74, died Jan. 23, 2014. He was born on July 24, 1939, in Clara City, Minn., to the late John and Amelia Heins.

He was a graduate of Warburg College in Waverly, Iowa. After graduation, he served 21 years in the U.S. Navy. Upon retirement, he taught physics and earth science for Norfolk Public Schools. He was a member of Southside Baptist Church and Gideons International.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Jacquelyn Heins, and their children, Anna McLeod (Jerry), and John Heins; special granddaughters, Kayla and Emily McLeod; sister, Carol Bonnema (Ken); brother, Dwight Heins (Cheryl); brothers-in-law, David (Tillie) and Don Rivenbark; sister-in-law, Joanne Willis; many nephews and nieces.

A celebration of his life will be held at Southside Baptist Church, 917 Carolina Road, Suffolk, VA 23434, on Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Jerry McLeod and the Rev. Robert Earl Thompson officiating. Interment with full military honors will be held Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2014, at 10 a.m. at the Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Multiple System Atrophy Coalition, 8311 Brier Creek Parkway, Suite 105-434, Raleigh, NC 27617, or Southside Baptist Church Building Fund.
