PORTSMOUTH — Surrounded by his loving family, David Clinton Kelly, 81, of 1056 Estates Court, Portsmouth, died on Feb. 21, 2014, at Kindred Health Care in Suffolk. He was a native of Mount Enterprise, Texas, and was preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Annie Mae Kelly, and his brother, Bill Kelly.
David served in the United States Air Force and received various awards. He worked as an accountant for NASA and for the General Accounting Office. He then worked at Planters Peanut Company in Suffolk. After retiring from Planters, he owned and operated DAS Trucking Inc. He co-owned and operated Coastal Farm Equipment in Sunbury, N.C. He also owned and operated a Ford dealership, hardware store, and a financial business in Sunbury, N.C. He was a general contractor and real estate investor in Suffolk.
Those who will cherish his memory are: his wife of 20 years, Joyce E. Kelly; daughter, Sandy Kelly Hightower; son, Eddie Leon Kelly; daughters, Angela Kelly, Kristine Morganti (Tadd), and Jessica Gonzalez; granddaughters, Sara Winters Smeby (Eric), Kelly Leigh Monson (Josh), Emily Morganti and Ella Morganti; and great-grandchildren, CeiliAnn, Declan, and Sirena Smeby; one brother, Homer C. Kelly Jr.; loving family and friends; and his beloved cat, Missy.
David was a member of West Park Church of Christ in Portsmouth, where he served as an elder, and as the president of the Truth Seekers’ Sunday School Class.
The family wishes to express their gratitude for the wonderful care and compassion given to David by Heartland Hospice and to the compassionate staff at Kindred Health Care for their loving daily care.
A celebration of life service will be held Sunday, Feb. 23, 2014, at 3 p.m., at West Park Church of Christ with Pastor Keith Lewis officiating. Burial will follow at Holly Lawn Cemetery in Suffolk. Friends may join the family at R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 W. Washington St., Suffolk, on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014, from 5 to 7 p.m. for visitation.
