Eight displaced by fire

The American Red Cross is assisting a family of eight that was displaced early Saturday morning by a fire in their East Suffolk Gardens home.

Four children and four adults were living in the home, which sustained heavy smoke and fire damage, according to Suffolk spokeswoman Diana Klink.

Emergency dispatchers received a call about the fire at 2:40 a.m., and firefighters were on the scene in the 1000 block of Custis Road at 2:45 a.m., Klink stated in a press release. When they arrived at the single-story brick ranch home, they found heavy smoke and fire in the rear of the house.

The fire was under control by 3:10 a.m., Klink stated.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
