The Nansemond River High School Lady Warriors looked like they might pull off an upset in the first quarter against host and defending state champion Lake Taylor High School on Tuesday. But they suffered a key injury and other areas of their game began to fail, resulting in an 82-48 loss.
Sophomore center Sabree Clegg, who had come on strong toward the end of the season, got hurt in the first period and was gone for good.
She had given her team a much-needed inside presence in the latter half of this season and was doing the same on Tuesday night before she went down.
“From that point, we really didn’t rebound very well,” Nansemond River head coach Calvin Mason said. “We were up by six at the end of the first quarter, and we were down 12 at halftime.”
Mason said that shift in the score was the ball game.
In addition to the clear advantage the Lady Titans enjoyed on the boards, Mason also said his team did not play defense well after Clegg left the game.
Freshman guard/forward Daijah Norris led the Lady Warriors with 15 points and sophomore forward Aneka Yelverton had 11.
Nansemond River finished the 2013-14 season with an overall record of 12-13.
