Joseph Sylvester Stallings

Joseph Sylvester Stallings, 69, of 410 Big Bethel Road, Hampton, died Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2014, at Sentara Careplex in Hampton. He was a native of Halifax, N.C., and the son of the late Clifton Stallings and Dorothy Mae Thorne Stallings. He was preceded in death by one sister, Dorothy Marie Hicks, and one brother, Clarence Stallings.
He attended Halifax Public Schools. He retired from Newport News Shipyard after 40 years as a foundry worker. He was a part-time employee with the Hampton City Schools.
He was survived by one daughter, Lisa Stallings, of Florida; three sons, Joseph Butler, Michael A. Butler, of Newport News, and Steven Sylvester Butler; one sister, Mary Stallings Johnson (Billy), of Suffolk; two brothers, Clifton Stallings Jr., of Suffolk, and Ezekiel Stallings (Nicole), of Portsmouth; 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 28, 2014, at Macedonia Baptist Church, 5500 Marshall Ave., Newport News, officiated by the Rev. John Wilson. Interment will be in Pleasant Shade Cemetery in Newport News. The family will receive friends Thursday, Feb. 27 from 7 to 8 p.m. at Crocker Funeral Home.
