David “Duke” Barnes Smith Jr., 93, passed away March 9, 2014, at home with his wife by his side.

He was born in Portsmouth, the son of the late Ruth Gay and David B. Smith Sr. He served in the Merchant Marines for four years and was a World War II veteran. He later went on to work and retire after 35 years from the Norfolk Naval Base as a supervisor in the power plant. Mr. Smith was a member of Liberty Spring Christian Church, where he was president of the Men’s Bible Class and sang in the choir until he was 90 years old. He served as a past deacon, Sunday School superintendent, and president of the Laymen’s Fellowship. He was the church custodian for 18 years and the security officer for many years. He was also a member of the Liberty Spring Ruritan Club, where he served as a past president.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 71 years, Irene Duke Smith; daughters, Barbara Holland and husband, Thomas, and Carol A. White, all of Suffolk; granddaughter, Michele Fowler and husband, Paul; grandson, Sean Kerlee and wife, Tracy; great grandchildren, Payton and Lincoln Kerlee; step-grandson, Bryan Holland and wife, Ellie; step-great-grandchildren, Bryce and Grayson Holland; brother, Roy E. Smith and wife, Magdaline of Norfolk; two nieces and cousins.

A funeral service will be held Thursday, March 13, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Liberty Spring Christian Church with the Rev. Allen Lancaster officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may join the family for a visitation Wednesday from 7 to 8 p.m. at Parr Funeral Home & Crematory and other times at the residence.
