Authorities in Isle of Wight County believe a man found dead during a brush fire on Saturday suffered a medical emergency before losing control of the yard debris he was burning in his yard.

Frank Birdwell, 66, of 22073 Mallard Cove Lane, was found dead shortly after 7:10 p.m., when a call came in to Isle of Wight County dispatchers about a brush fire. Carrollton Volunteer Fire Department responded and extinguished the fire.

There is no indication of criminal activity, according to the sheriff’s office.
