The Nansemond-Suffolk Academy baseball team returned from a three-day trip to Charlottesville over the weekend with a 1-1 start to the 2014 regular season.
St. Anne’s-Belfield School hosted the Saints on Friday for their season opener and defeated NSA 10-5. Spencer Ambrose picked up the loss on the mound for Nansemond-Suffolk, but Alberto Smith provided a bright spot at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two doubles.
On Saturday, the Saints turned things around with a 16-2 blowout of host The Covenant School.
Pitcher Greg Beale got the win, throwing four strikeouts. Mitchell Williams starred offensively by going 2-for-3 with a triple, three runs batted in and three runs scored. Numerous other players had two hits for NSA.
An added perk of the trip for the Saints was the opportunity to attend three games at Davenport Stadium — a series between No. 3 University of Virginia and Boston College. The Cavaliers won the series 3-0, but the final two games were close, including a 12-inning second game.
Nansemond-Suffolk (1-1) is set to visit Tidewater Academy on Friday.
