Suffolk Public Schools will host meetings on its voluntary Majority to Minority transfer program, which the district is implementing in an effort to further desegregate schools.

The first meeting will be 6 p.m. Thursday (tonight) at Booker T. Washington Elementary School. A second meeting will take place at Southwestern Elementary School at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

The U.S. Department of Justice urged adoption of the program after reviewing a proposed school attendance zone plan for Pioneer Elementary School, which will replace Southwestern in the new school year. The plan was approved with some changes.

Under the program, students currently at a school where they are in the majority based on their race have the option of attending a school where they would be in the minority.

Black Booker T. Washington students, for instance, will be able to attend Pioneer, and white Pioneer students will have the option to attend Booker T. Washington.
