The Fresh Pride grocery store on East Constance Road closed recently.

A sign on the door Friday read, “This store is now closed. Thanks for shopping with us!” Shelves that could be seen inside were bare, and one employee moved carts around inside.

Fred Goff, who was visiting the shopping center that also includes an Aaron’s, was surprised that the store was closed. He said it had been there for more than 15 years, though he didn’t know exactly how long.

Another man visiting the shopping center said the store had closed over the weekend.

Jeane Mapp, who answered the phone at Fresh Pride’s corporate offices in Virginia Beach on Friday, did not know how many employees worked at the store and did not know exactly when it closed. Nobody else was available to answer questions, she said, adding that only the accounting manager and payroll staff were in the office.

“Right now, there’s no comments being made,” she said.

The store chain’s website, www.freshpride.com, was offline Friday.

Other stores in the chain also closed abruptly recently, according to news reports.
