William Alfred Baker Sr., 65, of 503 S. Main St., Suffolk, died Tuesday, June 10, 2014, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. He was a native of Nansemond County and the son of Gladys Parker and the late Joseph Parker.

He was a graduate of John F. Kennedy High School. He retired from the city of Suffolk Fire Department after 27 years.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Valerie Brown Baker; one son, William Alfred Baker Jr. (Brittany), of Suffolk; three sisters, Gloria Williams, Linda Parker and Paula Woodly; four brothers, Anthony Jerome Parker, Willie Parker, Clayton Parker and Ganesh Javon Parker; one grandchild, Tyon Amard Baker; aunts, Catherine Skinner (James) and Alma Wright (Raymond); great-uncle, Arthur R. White (Georgette); other relatives and many friends.

A service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 13, 2014, in the mausoleum at Carver Memorial Cemetery, officiated by the Rev. Sylvester Silver and the Rev. Emanuel Myrick. A visitation with the family will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 12, 2014, at Crocker Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, a scholarship fund will be set up in Mr. Baker’s name.
