Rodger James Porter Jr.

Rodger James Porter Jr., 74, a Suffolk native, transitioned into eternal life on July 13, 2014, at his residence.
Mr. Porter was the son of the late Roger Porter and Gladys Porter. He attended East Suffolk High School. He later attended Norfolk State University and The Door of Life Bible Institute in Franklin. He was employed by Planters for 15 years and the Norfolk Naval Shipyard for 25 years, where he was a supervisor in the Supply Department. He also devoted numerous years of service to many local funeral homes. Mr. Porter was a member at Scott’s Revival Church in Franklin, where he served as a deacon.
He leaves to cherish his loving memory his wife of 53 years, Mazina S. Porter, of Suffolk; one daughter, Dionne Porter-Saunders (Paul), of Suffolk; two sons, Gregory V. Porter, of Suffolk and Derek S. Porter (Wanda), of Chesapeake; one sister Daisy Bynum; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends.
A homegoing service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 19, 2014, at the Apostolic Faith Church of God at 680 Oak St., Franklin, conducted by Dr. Evelyn S. Square. A visitation will be held on Friday, July 18, 2014, from 2 to 8 p.m. at Crocker Funeral Home, 900 E. Washington St., Suffolk. Entombment will be in Carver Memorial Cemetery in Suffolk. Family and friends will be received at his residence at 1341 Baltic St. in Suffolk. Crocker Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
