Despite the fact the Virginia Employment Commission is closing its office in the city’s Workforce Development Center this fall, city staff still will be on hand to offer resources, training and services, according to the city.
“While the VEC is leaving, the Suffolk Workforce Development Center remains in place and strives to strengthen partnerships with a variety of employment and education agencies,” a press release from the city stated on Tuesday.
Located at 157 N. Main St. on the second floor, the center is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. It contains a computer lab with 17 stations. Assistants are available to help patrons with applications and resumes.
Free adult education and GED preparation classes also are offered every morning during the school year and two mornings per week during the summer months. Free computer classes are offered through a partnership with Oasis, and credit and budget education are provided through collaboration with the Up Center, according to the press release.
AARP holds office hours at the center, four days a week to assist those 55 and older with job searches and training.
Additional assistance and offerings include career counseling, hiring events, job coaching, skills training, educational counseling, college entry and financial aid application assistance, unemployment benefits and job seeker assistance. A job board, fax and copy machine and certified typing test also are offered.
