James Walter Hofler

Deacon James Walter Hofler, 89, better known as “Jim” of Suffolk, departed this earthly life at his residence. He was born on Nov. 9, 1924, in Gates, N.C., to the late Alphearse “Button” and Alice Riddick Hofler.

He served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of the Korean War.

“Jim” leaves to cherish fond memories: his devoted wife, Rose Matthews Hofler, of the home; one daughter, Vallrie Freeman (Kearney), of Waterbury, Conn.; one brother, Clarence “Tee” Hofler, of Waterbury, Conn.; two sisters, Ella Mae Peele and Dorothy Riddick, both of Virginia Beach; three grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, other relatives and friends.

Services will be held on Saturday, Aug. 2, 2014, at 11 a.m. at New Hope Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. John Taylor Sr. Viewing will be held on Friday, Aug. 1 from 1 to 8 p.m. at Hunter’s Funeral Home, Gates. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that all donations be made to New Hope Baptist Church Building Fund in memory of Deacon Hofler.
