Back to school well-supplied

The organizer of Little Mount Zion Baptist Church’s second annual Back-to-School-Supplies Giveaway Car Show hopes for a good turnout this Saturday.
Terry Burnett, whose 2005 Chevrolet Corvette won’t be in this year’s event while it’s getting a new engine installed, said 100 school-age children received food, fun and backpacks stocked with school supplies last year.
“We’re helping less-fortunate kids because things are kind of hard right now and lots of people don’t have,” Burnett said.
“We thought (school supplies) would be a good thing to supply the kids with.”
In order to receive supplies, children have to be at the show, which takes place this Saturday, in the church parking lot at 3288 Pruden Blvd., from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Gates open at 9 a.m., when registration starts for cars, trucks and motorcycles. Registration at the gate costs $25 per vehicle, and the first 50 registrations receive a dashboard plaque.
Burnett is hoping for more support this year after 2013’s show had about 14 vehicles, which he said was “pretty good for the first year.”
People’s choice trophies will be awarded for first and second places in six categories: street rods, Corvettes, Mustangs, Dodges, original and luxury vehicles.
Music, food and face painting are also planned. Aug. 30 is the rain date.
Burnett paid tribute to Pastor Horace Bazemore Jr. and the rest of the church community for supporting the event. “They are very supportive, and we are looking forward to the outreach,” he said.
