The Drs. L.T. and Margaret W. Reid Scholarship Fund recently announced its scholarship winners from Suffolk’s three public high schools.
For 42 years, Drs. L.T. and Margaret W. Reid practiced medicine in the Suffolk community. They gave their time, talents and finances to serve and help others. These two caring humanitarians were regular contributors to community, civic, religious and educational projects throughout the years. They assisted many young people in furthering their education when there was a financial need — often paying for books, tuition and other expenses out of their own pockets. The Suffolk Museum received their extensive black arts collection before they retired.
Upon their retirement in 1984, Cypress Community League set up a scholarship in honor of their work. It was presented to them “as a living monument to their work and dedication to Suffolk citizens.” From this act, the gift grew into a corporation and became a tax-exempt organization. The first Drs. L.T. and Margaret W. Reid Scholarship was awarded in 1984. Since that time, 45 additional scholarships totaling more than $50,000 have been awarded to high school seniors entering college.
Three $1,000 scholarships were awarded to the following graduating seniors this June.
AnToneah Daughtrey from King’s Fork High School will attend Barton College in Wilson, N.C., to major in nursing. She graduated with a 3.43 grade point average, was a member of the marching and symphonic bands at King’s Fork, and was first-place winner of the City of Suffolk Martin Luther King Jr. Essay Contest. She stated in her essay: “If I am selected to receive this award, I intend to make your organization proud. As college approaches, my primary goal is to become an effective, compassionate and well-rounded person. I believe these are skills needed to be an excellent nurse. I am determined to become a successful and honorable member of society. Being a recipient of this scholarship will be an asset.”
Chase Allen Hurst from Nansemond River High School will attend Christopher Newport University in Newport News. He graduated with a 3.75 grade point average and was a member of the National Honor Society, Robotics Club, Film Club and River Rowdies. He stated in his essay: “Being awarded this scholarship will help me obtain the funds needed to further my education and obtain a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science. I look forward to the next chapters in my life — learning, growing and giving back to those who have influenced me and have led me down the right path.”
Angel Knight from Lakeland High School will attend Old Dominion University in Norfolk and major in business management. She graduated with a 3.93 grade point average and received the Woodmen of the World Award for American History and the Youth Service Award. She was a member of the National Society of High School Scholars. She stated in her essay: “I am a first generation college student and being so gives me even more motivation to obtain a college degree. I dare not limit myself to a high school diploma when there is more for me to accomplish. I will not let my circumstances keep me from achieving my dreams. I have a lot of heart and an abundant amount of confidence and faith within myself to know that all of my dreams shall come true because of hard work, dedication and a positive attitude. Success is my only option.”
To ensure future generations of Suffolk students have access to this scholarship, the board of directors continuously seeks donations. Donations should be mailed to Drs. L.T. and M.W. Reid Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 3517, Suffolk, VA 23439.
