Challengers outpace incumbents

Published 8:46 pm Saturday, September 20, 2014

Challengers for three City Council seats are collecting and spending money at a faster clip than the incumbents, campaign finance reports filed this week reveal.

Leading the pack is Donald Goldberg, who’s challenging Councilman Charles Parr in a three-way race in the Suffolk borough. Goldberg has taken in $11,200 in contributions this period compared to Parr’s $1,400.

Parr still has managed to spend more, though, having spent more than $4,500 compared to Goldberg’s $3,890.

The third person in the race, Kerry Holmes, has reported no contributions or expenditures.

The reports were filed Sept. 15 and include activity between July 1 and Aug. 31.

In the Holy Neck borough, challenger Timothy Johnson out-fundraised incumbent Jeffrey Gardy by more than 9 to 1. Johnson collected $3,394 compared to Gardy’s $360.

Johnson spent $3,400 compared to $100 for Gardy.

Collections and spending are a little closer in the Cypress borough race, though one challenger still is ahead of the incumbent.

Leroy Bennett has collected nearly $3,700 so far compared to $3,200 for Vice Mayor Charles Brown. Bennett is a former council member who was drawn out of his district and into Brown’s during the 2011-12 redistricting process.

Bennett has spent more, also, nearly $5,000 compared to about $3,500 for Brown.

A third candidate, Clinton Jenkins, collected $615 and spent $455 this period.

In the Chuckatuck borough, Councilman Mike Duman is the only incumbent not facing opposition. He reported no contributions or expenditures this period.

The below reports list the contributor and amount for itemized contributions, the amount of unitemized contributions (less than $100 from a single donor), expenses, and loans candidates gave themselves.

All amounts are rounded to the nearest dollar.
