Kimberly Morgan Piland, M.D., 55, of Conover, N.C., passed away on Saturday, Sept, 20, 2014, at her residence.

She was born May 6, 1959, in Anchorage, Alaska, daughter of Col. (Ret) Charles E. Morgan Jr. and Beverly Hilton Morgan, of Middleburg.

Kim graduated from high school in Springfield. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from the University of Virginia, and she continued her education at Eastern Virginia Medical School, where she received her Doctor of Medicine. She served her residency in emergency medicine at the Eastern Virginia Medical School.

On Nov. 6, 1982, she was married to John Henry “Jay” Piland III.

She worked part time in the Charlotte area and for the past 20 years has worked in family medicine with Catawba Valley Medical Center in Hickory.

She is a member of Western Avenue Baptist Church in Statesville.

She was preceded in death by one brother, William Morgan.

In addition to her husband and parents, her family also includes three sons, Jason Paul Piland (Erika), of Nashville, Tenn., Jacob Elliott Piland, of the home, and Jonathan Charles Piland (Kara), of Raleigh, N.C., along with one brother, Charles E. Morgan III, of Springfield, and a sister, Julie M. Hubbard (Stuart), of Manassas. She is also survived by four nephews and one niece.

Funeral services for Dr. Piland will be held at 4 p.m., Monday, Sept. 22, 2014, at Western Avenue Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Jeff Spry and the Rev. Robert E. Totty officiating. The family will meet with friends at the church prior to the service from 2:45 to 3:45. There will also be a reception in the church fellowship hall following the funeral service. Burial will be at 4 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2014, in the Holly Lawn Cemetery in Suffolk with the Rev. Robert E. Totty officiating.
