Nansemond River High School’s field hockey team won in a game with a deceptive score, Lakeland High School rebounded from a difficult 0-3 week and King’s Fork High School was shut out by a dominant district foe on Monday.

The Lady Warriors hosted Western Branch High School and took a 5-2 lead with about 17 minutes left in the game before giving up two goals in the final two minutes to come away with a narrow 5-4 win.

“That score doesn’t really reflect how the game went, I guess, exactly, but we can’t keep giving up goals,” NR coach Ali Mowry said.

The Lady Bruins struck first, and then Nansemond River’s Claire Janek responded with two unassisted goals, the latter of which came on a penalty stroke that she earned.

Then NR’s Desiree Patterson put in two more goals, one assisted by Janek. Western Branch made it 4-2 at halftime, scoring with a little over a minute to play.

Jaclyn Mounie restored the Lady Warriors’ three-goal lead in the second half before the visitors made their late run.

The Lady Bruins earned six penalty corners to Nansemond River’s two.

Lakeland defeated visiting Deep Creek High School 4-0.

“We’ve learned that we can’t dwell on the past, and we’ve got to move forward, and that’s what they did yesterday,” Lady Cavs coach Cortney Parker said on Tuesday.

Lexis Munford got the Lady Cavaliers on the board with 10:02 remaining in the first half, and then three other teammates added to this in the final 30 minutes of play.

Alex Kinsey scored, unassisted, and Stasha Waterfield and Maddy Carr put in Lakeland’s final goals, each assisted by Taylor Roten.

“The only complaint I have is that we didn’t finish more,” Parker said. “We had plenty of opportunities.”

Lakeland had 15 penalty corners compared to the Lady Hornets’ one.

Lady Cavs’ goalkeeper Erin Bradshaw recorded the shutout and had three saves.

King’s Fork High School fell 8-0 on the road to Hickory High School, which has blown out all three Suffolk public schools this season.

On Wednesday, Nansemond River visits Deep Creek, Lakeland visits Grassfield High School and King’s Fork hosts Western Branch.
